Police warn of increased home renovation fraud in east-end Toronto

Toronto police are reminding homeowners in the city’s east end to be vigilant due to increased home renovation fraud in a particular neighbourhood. Authorities said suspects were soliciting door-to-door, handing out flyers for fraudulent or non-existent companies and offering roofing, paving and fencing services in the Beaches. The vigilance department Monday issued a show cause notice to seven Public Works Department (PWD) engineers with regard to alleged wasteful expenditure of almost Rs 53 crore on the renovation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence. A home buyer usually does not pay goods and services tax (GST) on a home except if they buy a new home that has not been sold before as residential property. However, when a home that has been “substantially renovated” is sold, the buyer may have to pay GST. This can add 10 per cent to the price of the home for the buyer.
